CEO
StartUpBox #SouthBronx
Social-entrepreneurial pioneer, Majora Carter, redefined the field of Environmental-Equality by bringing world class green-infrastructure + accessible jobs to some of the poorest urban communities in America, starting with her hometown, the South Bronx. Now she is applying a similar economic development strategy with NYC’s growing tech industry.
StartUp Box opened in 2012 as a tech education & entrepreneurship project, and has since launched Quality Assurance testing services for the games industry. By hiring inner-city young adults with little access to the tech industry, StartUp Box leverages their skills (gaming & cultural vernacular, mobile web natives), and augments those skills with industry protocols for bug fixes – to provide a value added service to clients. Work is performed at storefront offices in the South Bronx so communities can see the economic activity – and not continue the extractive model of pulling potential income generators out of poor neighborhoods.
Majora is a Peabody Award winning broadcaster, MacArthur “genius” Fellow, BusinessInsider.com Silicon Alley 100, Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business 1000, Goldman Sach’s 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs, and her TEDtalk was one of the the first 6 to launch their groundbreaking website.
